Geometry analysis
Geometry inspection with high accuracy 3D scanners
Maximum efficiency
Reduce Fuel Consumption
Eliminate vibrations and noise
Utilizing the latest high resolution laser scanning technology, we have developed a scanning and measuring procedure for marine propellers, where the complete geometry of marine propellers is accurately recorded, regardless of size and shape.
Virtually reconstructed geometry is then inspected with specialized software to check all dimension and possible irregularities of the propeller blades. Software automatically inspects all standard propeller dimensions such as: pitch, blade thickness, hydrofoil shape, rake, skew etc…
All propeller parameters are compared throughout 3D surface comparison and deviations are visualized by color accordingly to standard. Standard ISO 484/2 specifies allowable tolerances for desired precision class.
By evaluating blade thickness at each radial division enables us to also precisely determinate the weight of each individual propeller blade.

PropSAS® certified partner
Prop Scan® is a revolutionary propeller testing invention that allows you to repair, modify and equalize propeller blades with very high accuracy.
Prop Scan's sophisticated technology ensures geometry accuracy by enabling our authorized technicians to tune the propeller to the highest standards within ISO 484/2 tolerances.
Prop Scan® allows the propeller pitch to be accurately measured to within 0.25 mm. Depending on the tolerance class to which the propeller geometry is manufactured.
Refurbishment and modification
Repair
Adriatic Propellers performs repairs of all types of propellers (bronze, aluminum, stainless steel). For the repair, optimization and modification of the propeller we are certified by Bureau Veritas. Any propeller repaired or modified all blades must additionaly inspected corrected accrodingly to ISO 484 . Propeller inspection is performed with Prop Scan device or 3D scanner and is repaird to class requested by the customer. The missing parts of the propeller can usally be TIG welded by our certified welder. If necessary, the welds are checked with appropriate penetrants. After repair and modification Propellers are either static or dynamically balanced. Aluminum propellers are painted with quality durable black paint. Bronze and stainless steel propellers are polished to a high gloss finish and, if necessary, bronze propellers can be coated with a silicone prop one coating.
Optimization
With assistance of 3D scanner, we can effectively identify operating problems by also scanning hull shape and other propulsion components configuration. With special reverse engineering technique computer aided designs is generated which is furthermore used in special CFD or empirical calculation. Moreover, with aid of this technology we are able to suggest possible retrofit options of existing propulsion. However sometimes it’s more economically to produce new optimized custom propeller for existing vessel which will ensure more favorable operating conditions for same configuration and will enormously boost population efficiency there so reduce fuel consumption at cursing speed.
Modification
Nearly 95% of inboard propellers are not optimal for the ship on which they are installed, assuming the other 5% are affected only incidentally. The propeller was usually manufactured to the design diameter and pitch, as the basic parameters of propeller dimensions, and that's it. At least when we're talking about propellers for larger ships. For those smaller ones, the propeller was purchased with the engine, regardless of the boat and engine it would be installed on. With the Prop Scan device and associated software, we can evaluate difference between designed and actually achieved engine RPMs, we can modify or make the optimum propeller for the engine and boat. Such a propeller will have a great impact on the energy efficiency and overall performance of the boat, i.e. the engine will be correctly (optimally) loaded.
Balancing
Dynamic balancing
We dynamically balance every repaired and each new manufactured propeller accordingly to ISO 1940 1:2003. The standard has issued guidelines with regard to a number of different kinds of devices. A balance quality grade of G6.3 is appropriate for most of propellers. A grade of G2.5 is usually only required on very special equipment. We exceed these standards, and we offer G2.5 grade balancing in most cases. Balanced propeller ensures much smoother ride. Minimizing residual mass unbalance equals to vibration amplitude reduction and also lowers generated noise. Balanced propeller significantly extends life span of all other mechanical components.
Paint coating
PropOne: a non-biocidal coating that prevents marine organisms from adhering to it
PropOne is a non-biocidal coating that prevents marine organisms from adhering to metal surfaces at sea. It has been developed to improve vessel performance and this is made possible by its smooth surface and excellent corrosion protection.
Why is it important to use PropOne?
It is well known that energy savings are achieved by keeping the underwater surface of the ship's hull and propeller surface smooth.
The presence of marine organisms on the propellers reduces its efficiency.
Even a low level of fouling on the propeller surface results in a 20% loss of efficiency. High levels of contamination result in up to
70% reduction in efficiency.
Mirror finish polishing
Mirror polishing is a process in which a finished propeller is placed in a tumbling machine together with special abrasive particles, where it is deburred, cleaned and polished. Hours of collisions between the abrasives and the propeller results in a mirror-polished workpiece. Polishing propellers to the highest surface quality increases the performance of the propeller, as the viscous drag on the blade surface is greatly reduced and the motor consumes less energy. The polished surface is also more repellent to organisms and more resistant to oxidation. Our barrel finishing machine is capable of polishing propellers up to 820 mm.
